Nursing is one of the largest and important professions in the healthcare sector and provides never-ending opportunities to practice and interacting with others. Like other professions, nursing has its philosophy. Nursing philosophy can be defined as one’s understanding in terms of personal beliefs, values, and ethics to deliver quality care and treatment to the patients and their families (Hutchinson, 2017). These beliefs and values direct a person/nurse to act in a certain way or follow some guiding principles while dealing with patients, families, and co-workers (Burridge, & Foster, 2019). Moreover, philosophy can vary from profession to profession and person to person. In other words, an individual’s philosophy can be different from others, depending on their profession, personality, knowledge, experiences interests and many more (Burridge, & Foster, 2019). Therefore, I also have my nursing philosophy which is based on my personal beliefs, values, ethics, previous experiences, interests, and current knowledge.
In my childhood, when my grandfather fell sick and paralysed after having a heart attack, I witnessed my mother taking care of him, I developed an interest in looking after others. Then after secondary education, I decided to choose nursing as my profession, because I felt that this is what I can do with compassion. For me, Nursing is a concept of health promotion, disease prevention, adequate treatment, and rehabilitation (wherever required) (Burridge, & Foster, 2019). Health is paramount for every individual and a state of health can be defined as a state of well-being and not merely the absence of disease condition. Therefore, I believe that a nurse with theoretical knowledge and clinical expertise play a vital role, not only to maintain the health of the patients but also to prevent the re-occurrence of disease conditions. Moreover, personal beliefs, attitude, behaviours, and professional skills are some of the important factors that help a healthcare worker to deliver optimal care and treatment to the patients. I believe that a nurse must be competent to treat patients with care and compassion (Burridge, & Foster, 2019). Also, studies show that the direct relationship between the types of nursing care and patient satisfaction. Moreover, care, compassion, good communication, commitment, critical thinking, and courage are some of the basic principles to provide optimal nursing care to the patients (Andrade et al, 2016). I believe that nurses must provide equal care to every client irrespective to age, sex, gender, religion, social status and any other type of discrimination. I consider empowering my patients with accurate knowledge and skills not only to deliver self-care but also to prevent further complications (Hutchinson, 2017).
Besides this, I believe that only a healthy nurse can help others to be healthy and disease-free. Therefore, I promote my health to be fit to work and delivering continuous care to others. Every nurse must update herself regularly to be more knowledgeable regarding ongoing changes in nursing practice such as advanced technology, the concept of patient-centred care, growing responsibilities and changed nursing culture. Overall nurses need to think critically and acquire specific skills to work efficiently (Andrade et al, 2016).
